Senior Design Engineer

This is full-time role for a remote, US-based employee.

About Shortwave

We're a venture-backed startup building the future of digital communications on top of the world's most ubiquitous messaging platform — email. We believe that email should prioritize people (not advertising), getting through your inbox shouldn't require busywork, and sending an email should be as fast as typing a text message. Our first product, a brand new inbox experience for Gmail, launched in February 2022. The Verge called it "The Google Inbox successor I've been waiting for".

We have an experienced team distributed across the US, with almost half of our team located in California. Our CEO Andrew formerly cofounded Firebase (later acquired by Google), and our early team met Andrew while working there building the infrastructure behind millions of today's mobile and web apps.

About the role

In this role you will contribute to our mobile & web apps as both a designer and a frontend software engineer.

You will:
  • Span the entire lifecycle of building new features — from interaction design, to user testing, to prototyping, to building and shipping production code.
  • Work closely with our product lead as well as with other engineers and designers
  • Have a lot of creative freedom to explore new concepts and test them with users.
  • Add a bit of your own flair to our product 🧞‍♀️

About you

We're looking for a passionate and creative designer who's also experienced as a frontend web or mobile engineer, and who is able to bring ideas from concept into reality.

  • A solid understanding of the design process and experience designing and shipping production apps.
  • Experience designing complex mobile interactions.
  • Frontend engineering skills (mobile or web)
  • Demonstrated creativity and attention to detail
  • Good communications skills both verbal and written, and a passion for talking with users
  • A willingness to work hard and learn new things quickly

Bonus points

  • Visual design & illustration skills
  • Experience with React, React Native, TypeScript, Kotlin, or Swift
